1. Bologna was a real treat. Karl, John, and I dropped off our stuff in the hotel room and looked out the window to see the taller of the towns landmark towers (Asinelli). Of course we climbed up and got the birds eye view, and we found out that both towers are leaning a bit. They don’t get as much exposure as the one in Pisa, but the smaller one (Garisenda) looks kind of dangerous, and I’m pretty sure they don’t let people up inside it. People orient themselves in the city based on their position relative to the Two Towers, so Bologna has got to be taking steps to make sure they won’t fall. Of the highlights during our stay, that’s number one, followed by the service at the Bologna Cathedral, followed by the walk through the city’s colonnades. If there’s one place in Italy to go on a day with shitty weather, it’s Bologna. You could almost walk from one side of town to the next under cover, and still see the sites. There’s young people from the University all over, so for me it was a nice change of pace from all the old balls at every other stop in the 10-day trip. In the morning we were off to Modena, then home.
