1. Arancia Rosso

From Florence we travelled about an hour and a half south to Cortona. It was a little weird because our introduction to the place was a visit to it’s medieval graveyard.

It’s strange, walking around in a place full of dead people you have no relation to. Trying to focus on anything other than the graves over people buried there is difficult, and a little uncomfortable. It was a solemn and respectful place, which I guess is just what a graveyard needs to be, if I ever design one. Gotta keep my options open, right?

We got to the main part of town, and decided to take any road leading uphill. We’re gettin mountain-men calves out here with all these hills. It seemed the roads pretty much ran into the main artery leading to the top, where the Sanctuary of Saint Margaret sits. Good ‘ol St. Marge.

It was closed… as was the fortress a little further up the hill that was built by the late Renaissance Medici’s. We were a little pissed, but we got a nice view of the city and surrounding landscape, and headed back down for hands down the best gelato I’ve ever had.

Two big scoops of Arancia Rosso in a cup, per favore. Baskin Robbin’s would do well to add “Orange Red” gelato to their selection, but they’d have to come up with a name for the flavor that doesn’t just describe its color. They could just call it “Italy’s best”, and get away with it.

On that good note, we left for Orvieto.
